The Managing Director will be responsible for all aspects of the
day-to-day operations and designated as a point of contact for the
newly formed Institute for Resilient Environmental and Energy
Systems (IREES). -The Managing Director will assist the Director in
fulfilling the IREES strategic plan and in developing the
operational infrastructure and procedures for the IREES. The
Managing Director will help identify and help develop the IREES
response to funding opportunities; help lead in the development and
the management of faculty research teams and Institute projects;
manage IREES reporting; manage IREES student interns; manage
functions of the IREES administrative assistant; and help build
strong, collaborative relationships with international, federal,
state, and local government agencies and corporate affiliates.
Typical Functions May Include:
1. - - - -IREES-affiliated project development and management:
-Help identify research funding opportunities; manage large
interdisciplinary and diverse project teams and build strong
collaborative relationships with researchers, federal, state and
local government agencies and corporate affiliates.
2. - - - -Increase brand awareness and stakeholder connections:
Bring in new Institute affiliates, coordinate public information
efforts, help organize Institute workshops/conferences.
3. - - - -Institute development: Provide leadership in all phases
of development lifecycle of the Institute. This will include
identifying potential projects that meet the needs of funding
agencies and partners as well as utilize the Institute's,
University's, and the State's strengths, building effective
interdisciplinary teams for projects, and shepherding proposal
development and writing process. -Help the Director to identify
research directions and formulate long-term business development
strategies for the Institute.
4. - - - -Operations Management: -Help the Director work with other
members of the VPRP team, affiliated faculty, relevant partners
with the University, other affiliated universities, corporate
affiliates and government agencies to develop the business plan for
the Institute. -This will also include all aspects of developing
new programs for the Institute, including forming teams of
researchers, signature programs, interacting with potential funding
agencies, supporting and contributing to the creation of
5. - - - -Engagement: -Help determine strategic directions and
develop and manage partnerships with outside organizations, such as
the NSF, DOE, USDA, and other federal, state and local agencies
across the country. Develop and foster relationships among
Institute/University faculty and staff, various community leaders,
government agencies, and other funding agencies. Participate in
appropriate committees and boards.
6. - - - -Fiscal Management: -Fiscally responsible for managing
foundation and grant money received and recurring Institute
budgets. -The Managing Director will be expected to use independent
judgment and authority in managing Institute resources and in
specifying, ordering and approving the purchase of equipment,
supplies and travel.
7. - - - -Supervision: -Supervise and direct the efforts of
administrative, technical and management staff and students.
-Direct day-to-day administrative aspects, including hiring,
training, orientation, supervision, and evaluation. -Participate in
wage decisions, promotions, and employee relation issues. -Review
workloads and reassign tasks as required to ensure timely
completion of projects or to take advantage of special capabilities
of the personnel.
