Job Description:
The Assistant Dean serves as the principal liaison between the
administration, faculty, and students, providing leadership and
strategic direction to facilitate a supportive student experience
that helps students achieve academic success. This position works
with college stakeholders (including Engineering Pathways) to
provide new and enhanced programming that builds student
engagement, belonging and retention. The Assistant Dean has
responsibility for building support structures for individual
student well-being, including mental and physical health,
interpersonal conflict, and academic preparedness. The Assistant
Dean serves as an advocate for student concerns and needs with the
faculty and administration and as a resource to connect students to
appropriate support offices and activities within and the college
and across campus. This position independently manages the
activities within the Williams Student Services Center and has
authority and oversight responsibility in related matters,
including academic advising, student support, student orientation
and events, enrollment management, and other related activities.
The Assistant Dean supervises staff in support of these functions.
Interview and counsel students contemplating withdrawal or leave of
absence from the University; when appropriate, grant leaves of
absence or process withdrawals and cancellations and recommend
exceptions to the student refund schedule. Evaluate, and in
collaboration with Deans and Directors, make decisions about
student requests for readmission. Research, evaluate, and recommend
changes in rules, regulations, and policies as related to the
student experience. Develop and coordinate pathways for transfer
students; building and maintaining relationships with the partner
institutions. Responsible for monitoring student enrollment,
retention and graduation and working with stakeholders to develop
strategies and interventions on an ongoing basis. Serve as a member
of university committees related to student welfare, enrollment
management, academic affairs, and other aspects related to student
status. Build and nurture cross-campus relations with other
colleges across campus. Assist in the coordination of Student
Affairs response to major crisis and other unusual events within
the University community. This position reports to the Senior
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development.
Required Education: Graduate degree in relevant field of study,
AND: Minimum of 60 months working in student services/academic
advising Minimum of 36 months of supervisory experience Skills:
Ability to read, interpret, understand, and communicate to others
written material, instruction, and policies Detail oriented for
accuracy of data and information Able to work well with a broad
range of people from diverse backgrounds, personalities, and
experiences Able to work independently towards the goals of the
college Demonstrated ability to think strategically, develop new
initiatives, and revise current programs as informed by stakeholder
input and relevant data Excellent verbal and written communication
Certifications: Driver License required for travel Advertised
Physical Requirements: Light lifting is required Departmental
Preferences: PhD in Education, Guidance or Counseling or other
related field Certified or training as Academic Life Coach
Supervision: 9- Advisors -9 and 1- Front Desk employee Special
