*Job Title: * Surgical Technician *General Description: * This position is located at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center. This facility provides professional medical and nursing services to Indian Beneficiaries. The Surgical Technician provides surgical patient care to these beneficiaries. *Supervision Received: * Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Manager of Surgical and Obstetrical Services and Director of Inpatient Nursing and the immediate supervision of the Surgery Center Nurse Manager. Work is assigned daily through the OR schedule by the Nurse-In-Charge (NIC) or Surgery Center Manager. In absence of the Surgery Center Manager or NIC, direct technical guidance is from the RN circulating in surgery. The Surgery Center Manager or NIC will plan and assign duties, as well as evaluate the employee's performance. This position performs most duties independently except to consult with the Surgery Center Manager, NIC, or circulating RN on unusual problems that arise. Work is assigned daily through the OR schedule. Works closely with the RN responsible for the individual cases. Surgical Technologists work under the immediate supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Surgery Center Manager will review work for compliance to established guidelines and practices. *Supervision Exercised: * None *Supervision Essential Job Functions: ** Utilizes knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. * Provides surgical scrub assistance, in either the primary or secondary role, during invasive procedures performed within the Surgery Center. * Occasionally provides surgical scrub assistance, in either the primary or secondary role, during invasive procedures in other areas of the facility (OB, ED, etc.). * Performs other functions in the OR that require adherence to sterile technique. * Gathers and prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment for pending surgical procedures, based upon surgeon preference cards. * Updates surgeon preference cards following each procedure on an as needed basis. * Performs surgical hand scrub per AST/AORN/CDC guidelines. * Gowns and gloves self, surgeon, and assistants utilizing sterile technique. * Sets up sterile field with appropriate supplies, instruments, equipment, solutions, and medications as required for procedure utilizing sterile technique. * Performs appropriate instrument and soft supply counts with the circulating RN prior to, during, and after every surgical procedure. * Labels all medications and solutions on and off sterile field utilizing standard practices. * Prepares sterile drapes and assists surgeon with draping patient/sterile field. * Vigilantly observes surgeon and uses knowledge principles to anticipate what the surgeon will need next. * Passes instruments, supplies, equipment, solutions, medications, etc. to surgeon during procedure utilizing appropriate technique and without delay. * Maintains highest standards of sterile technique before and during procedure. * Observes for breaks in sterile technique and calls any issues to the attention of the surgeon and circulating RN. Takes steps to rectify any breaks in sterile technique immediately. * Utilizes universal precautions at all times when handling contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies. * Prepares and applies sterile dressings per surgeon preference cards or direct order. * Assists with lateral transfer of patients to and from OR table/gurney utilizing proper body mechanics and appropriate assistive devices. * Cleans, disinfects, and prepares instruments and equipment for terminal sterilization. * Assists with maintaining supply par levels for all items. * Functions in Central Sterile on an as needed basis to clean, package, assemble, sterilize, and distribute surgical instrumentation based upon AAMI/AORN/AST/IAHCSMM guidelines/requirements. Ensures proper diagnostic testing is completed prior to initiation of processing. Completes and maintains documentation for these processes. * Is familiar with individual manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) documents and processes all instrumentation/equipment accordingly. * Operates various equipment for sterilization and high-level disinfection of instrumentation/equipment on a daily basis. Ensures proper diagnostic testing is completed prior to initiation of processing. Completes and maintains documentation for these processes. * Adheres to departmental/hospital safety practices, policies and procedures, and unit practices based upon industry standards/requirements. * Subject to return to surgery on a "call back" basis for emergencies. Must be physically present in Surgery Center prepared to perform duties within thirty (30) minutes of notification. Minimum Qualifications *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: **Required* - Must possess the ability to identify and utilize a wide variety of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies. *Required* - Must be able to demonstrate impeccable sterile technique. *Required* - Must have flexibility with working all shifts. *Required* - Must possess extensive knowledge of handling, cleaning, packaging, and maintaining surgical instruments and hospital equipment. *Required* - Must possess an extensive knowledge of aseptic principles, microbiology, and medical procedures sufficient to understand the ways diseases/infections are transmitted. *Education: **Technical School Required* - Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required; *Technical School Preferred* - evidence of Certification in Surgical Technology is preferred. *Education Note: **Training And Experience: **Required Experience* (6 months - 3 years) - A combination of experience and on-the-job training/education, including at least six (6) months recent employment as a Scrub Tech is required. *Licenses, Certifications, Other: **Required* - Proof of completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program *Required* - BLS certification (within the first two months of hire if not current)*Physical Requirements: **Required* - Work on the assigned unit requires considerable standing, walking, bending, and stooping for extended periods of time. The individual may be required to lift/carry in excess of 50 pounds. Must possess the ability to cope with constant changes in a physically demanding, high-stress environment. Regular exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions. Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, hand and eye coordination. Working irregular hours. *Work Environment: *
